The Dental Implant Process
Whether you’re having a dental implant placed to replace a missing tooth or several teeth, the process is essentially the same, and it requires the teamwork of an experienced dental surgeon (typically an oral surgeon, periodontist, or prosthodontist) and a cosmetic dentist who can make the beautiful restoration(s).
At Meadows Dental Group, we have these dentists all under one roof, which makes planning and treatment a cinch!
These are the stages of dental implants:
•First, an implant dentist (Dr. O’Leary or Dr. Peppler) will evaluate you to see whether you’re eligible for dental implants.
•Next, the dentist (Dr. Baer) who will perform the surgery and the dentist who will create the restoration(s) will coordinate a care plan to ensure that the implant procedures go as smoothly as possible.
•From there, you’ll have oral surgery, which can be performed using a local anesthetic or general anesthesia. During the surgery, the dental implant (which is a titanium device to which the replacement tooth or teeth will be attached) is placed in your gums or bone. A protective cover is placed on the dental implant site, one which will stay on while the implant is integrating with your bone. During this time of healing and bonding (known as “osseointegration”), you’ll be wearing a temporary restoration so that there’s no gap in your smile.
•After a few months (the timing varies from patient to patient), the cover is taken off, and a different temporary restoration is affixed to the dental implant. From here, the gum will grow around the implant, making it look as natural as your other teeth.
•Once the gum is finished growing, a permanent restoration will replace the temporary one, and your dental implant procedure is completed.
Generally, all of the dental implant steps – from start to finish – take three to six months.

Please note: Contrary to many advertising claims, the “one-day implant” or “same-day implant” is virtually unheard of. For perhaps 3% of the population, surgery and a temporary restoration can be performed in the same day, but it’s rare. The dental implant procedure outlined above is the more accepted practice.
