Dental Implants Today
In 1952, a Swedish surgeon, Per-Ingvar Branemark, discovered that pure titanium could literally “grow” into bone – a process he named “osseointegration.” This groundbreaking research set the stage for what would become today’s dental implants – which are replacements for the tooth root and the tooth.
A lightweight, titanium device is embedded into the jawbone, and this replaces the tooth root. Once this anchor or screw has bonded with the bone, and the surrounding gum tissue has grown around it, a replacement tooth is screwed into the implant, creating a natural-looking, beautiful restoration.
The implant process, from beginning to end, typically takes 3-6 months, with 2-4 visits to an implant dentist.
Dental implants offer a vast improvement over their counterparts of dental bridges and partial dentures or full dentures.
